Haniyasubiko-no-Kami is the male earth deity of Kojiki (712 CE), arising from the excrement of the dying Izanami.
Description
Haniyasubiko-no-Kami is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume in the deity-making passage of the death of Izanami. The text reads, "From the excrement came Haniyasubiko-no-Kami, and next Haniyasubime-no-Kami," placing the deity among the births that occurred as Izanami suffered burns from the birth of Kagutsuchi. Nihon Shoki (720 CE) Jindai chapter five variant gives the corresponding form Haniyamabime-no-Kami as the female earth deity. His mother is Izanami-no-Mikoto, his paired consort is Haniyasubime-no-Kami, and his coeval kin include Kanayamabiko and Kanayamabime (metal deities), Mitsuhanome-no-Kami (water) and Wakumusubi-no-Kami (grain), the cluster of post-Kagutsuchi deities. He is enshrined at the Tsuchimiya of Ise Geku as Otsuchi-no-Mioya-no-Kami, transmitting the tradition of the Haji ancestral line as the deity of clay, pottery and tile manufacture.
