Description

Hayaakitsuhiko-no-Kami is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume in the deity-making passage. The text reads, "Next they bore the deity of the river-mouth named Hayaakitsuhiko-no-Kami, and his younger sister Hayaakitsuhime-no-Kami." He is born to Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto in the sequence that gives rise to the sea and river deities, as a paired deity of the river-mouth boundary. Nihon Shoki (720 CE) Jindai chapter five variant gives a corresponding account. His consort is his younger sister Hayaakitsuhime-no-Kami, and the pair beget eight children including Awanagi-no-Kami, Awanami-no-Kami, Tsuranagi-no-Kami, Tsuranami-no-Kami, Ame-no-Mikumari-no-Kami, Kuni-no-Mikumari-no-Kami, Ame-no-Kuhizamochi-no-Kami and Kuni-no-Kuhizamochi-no-Kami, the genealogy of river and water-distribution deities. He is enshrined at Hayaakitsu Jinja in Matsue and Sakunadari Jinja in Iishi, Shimane. With his consort he is invoked in the Oharae-no-Kotoba as a purifying deity, set within the system of Shinto rites for the cleansing power of water.
