The source attestation is the Yomi passage in Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume, where eight thunder deities are recorded as arising on the body of Izanami when Izanagi looked upon her in the underworld. Hono-Ikazuchi is the Fire Thunder of the set, placed by commentaries on the chest of Izanami's body, among the eight that include the Great Thunder, Black Thunder, Cleaving Thunder, Young Thunder, Earth Thunder, Naru-Ikazuchi and Hiding Thunder.
