Nakatsu-Watatsumi-no-Kami is the middle-layer sea deity of Kojiki (712 CE), one of the three Watatsumi deities born of Izanagi's purification.

Description

Nakatsu-Watatsumi-no-Kami is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume in the purification passage. The text reads, "While bathing in the middle of the water, there came into being the deities Nakatsu-Watatsumi-no-Kami and Nakatsutsu-no-O-no-Mikoto," placing this deity in the middle layer of the threefold purification. Izanagi-no-Mikoto bathes at the Tachibana-no-Odo-no-Awakihara in Tsukushi, where the bottom, middle and surface of the water yield in paired strata the three Watatsumi deities and the three Sumiyoshi deities. His siblings born together are Soko-tsu-Watatsumi-no-Kami and Uwa-tsu-Watatsumi-no-Kami, the three together forming the Watatsumi triad. As Watatsumi-no-Kami as a whole he is the father of Toyotama-Hime-no-Mikoto and Tamayori-Hime-no-Mikoto in the Yamasachihiko narrative. He is enshrined at Shikaumi Jinja on Shikanoshima in Fukuoka and at Hotaka Jinja in Azumino, Nagano, the latter transmitting the tradition of the inland Azumi migration.
