Description

Odoyamatsumi-no-Kami (淤縢山津見神) is a mountain deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). The name element "odo" is interpreted as "chest" or as the connected ridges of peaks, while "yamatsumi" denotes the spiritual force of mountains. He is one of the eight Yamatsumi deities formed when Izanagi slew the fire deity Kagutsuchi. From the body emerged Masakayamatsumi (head), Odoyamatsumi (chest), Okuyamatsumi (belly), Kurayamatsumi (genitals), Shigiyamatsumi, Hayamatsumi, Harayamatsumi, and Toyamatsumi from the limbs. This deity is recorded as the one emerging from the chest. Together with the iron deities Iwasaku, Nesaku, and Mikahayahi formed from the sword, this group forms the cohort of deities born in the Kagutsuchi-slaying scene.
