Description
Oikazuchi (大雷, also read Oikazuchi) is a thunder deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). The name "Oikazuchi" denotes the most intense thunder force, and the deity heads the eight thunder deities (yakusa-no-ikazuchi) formed on Izanami's corpse in the Land of Yomi. According to the Kojiki upper scroll, when Izanagi visited Izanami in Yomi and lit the teeth of his comb to enter the hall, he found maggots on her body and eight thunder deities emerging from her. Oikazuchi is recorded first, followed by Hoikazuchi (chest), Kuroikazuchi (belly), Sakuikazuchi (genitals), Wakaikazuchi (left hand), Tsuchiikazuchi (right hand), Narukazuchi (left foot), and Fushiikazuchi (right foot). The eight deities are honored as thunder protectors and as deities of agricultural rainfall.
