Description

Okitsushimahime-no-Mikoto (奥津島比売命) is one of the Three Munakata Goddesses recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE), serving as an alternate name for Tagirihime-no-Mikoto. The Nihon Shoki (720 CE) writes the name as Okitsushimahime. The goddess personifies the island of Okinoshima in the Genkai Sea and serves as the central figure of the Three Munakata Goddesses, titled "Michinushi-no-Muchi". According to the Kojiki, she was born from the breath of Amaterasu Omikami chewing the ten-grasp sword of Susanoo during their oath-pact. Her father is Susanoo and her mother is Amaterasu (by oath). She is venerated at Okitsumiya of Munakata Taisha in Fukuoka, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites".
