Description

Okotooshio-no-Kami (大事忍男神, also read Ogotooshio-no-Kami) is a deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). The name Okotooshio is interpreted as "the male deity who completed a great deed", and the deity occupies the position of the first deity in the deity-birth phase that followed the great task of land-creation. According to the Kojiki upper scroll, immediately after Izanagi and Izanami completed land-creation, "the next deity born was named Okotooshio-no-Kami". No independent narrative scene is transmitted. The six household deities (Iwatsuchibiko, Iwasuhime, Otohiwake, Amenofukio, Oyabiko, and Kazamokutsuwake-no-Oshio) followed. Father is Izanagi; mother is Izanami. The scholar Motoori Norinaga in the Kojiki-den identified this deity with Kotosaka-no-O-no-Kami enshrined at Kumano Hongu Taisha.
