Description
Okuyamatsumi-no-Kami (奥山津見神) is a mountain deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). The element "oku" denotes the inner recess of the mountain, and "yamatsumi" denotes the spiritual force of the mountain. He is one of the eight Yamatsumi deities formed when Izanagi slew the fire deity Kagutsuchi and the deceased body produced eight mountain deities from different parts. This deity emerged from the belly. Siblings include Masakayamatsumi (head), Odoyamatsumi (chest), Kurayamatsumi (genitals), Shigiyamatsumi, Hayamatsumi, Harayamatsumi, and Toyamatsumi from the four limbs, forming the eight-deity mountain lineage. The deity has no separately attested cult center; veneration is preserved as part of the lineage of mountain deities recorded in the upper scroll.
