Description

Omizunu-no-Kami (淤美豆奴神) is an earthly deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and the Izumo Fudoki (early 8th century). The Izumo Fudoki writes the name as Yatsukamizu-Omitsuno-no-Mikoto or Omitsuno-no-Mikoto. The name means "great lord of water", positioning the deity as an ancient ruling figure over the sea and land of western Izumo. The Kojiki records him as the fourth-generation descendant of Susanoo; the Nihon Shoki (720 CE) does not include him. In the Izumo Fudoki Ou district section, Yatsukamizu-Omitsuno appears as the protagonist of the land-pulling myth, drawing land surplus from Silla, Kita-no-Mon, and Koshi to extend the Izumo country, finally planting his staff at the Ou Sacred Grove. Father is Fukabuchinomizu-yaregana-no-Kami; mother is Ame-no-Tsudoechine-no-Kami. Principal shrine: Nagahama Shrine in Izumo.
