Description
Oyamakui-no-Kami (大山咋神) is an earthly deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). As a child of Otoshi-no-Kami, he governs the holding of mountain land. He resides on Mount Hiei, presiding over the boundary between Omi and Yamashiro Provinces, and stands at the center of the Hie / Hiei mountain-deity tradition. According to the Kojiki upper scroll Otoshi lineage section, "next Oyamakui-no-Kami, whose alternate name is Yamasue-no-Onushi-no-Kami. This deity resides on the Hie Mountain of Chika-Omi Province, and also resides at Matsuo in Kazuno, and uses the singing arrow". The deity resides at both Mount Hiei and Matsuo. Father is Otoshi-no-Kami; mother is Amechikarumizuhime. Principal shrines include Hiyoshi Taisha in Otsu and Matsuo Taisha in Kyoto. Matsuo Taisha is the tutelary of the Hata clan and the principal shrine for sake brewers nationwide.
