Description

Sakitamahime (前玉比売) is a goddess recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). The name element "Sakitama" connects to "sakitama" (the spirit of good fortune), positioning her as a goddess governing well-being and abundance. She is venerated at Sakitama Shrine, the Engishiki-listed shrine in the Saitama district of Musashi Province, and her name is identified as the origin of the modern prefecture name. According to the Kojiki upper scroll lineage section of Okuninushi-no-Kami, she is the daughter of Amenomikanushi-no-Kami in the descendant lineage of Okuninushi. Father is Amenomikanushi-no-Kami. Sakitama Shrine is located on the Sengen-Zuka tumulus of the Saitama Kofun Group in Gyoda, Saitama. The shrine is recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) Jinmyocho as "Sakitama Shrine, two seats, Saitama district, Musashi Province". The shrine name became the district name and later the prefecture name.
