Description
Shigiyamatsumi-no-Kami (志芸山津見神, also written 志藝山津見神) is a mountain deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). The name element "shigi" is interpreted as overlapping or lush, while "yamatsumi" denotes the spiritual force of the mountain. He is one of the eight Yamatsumi deities formed when Izanagi slew the fire deity Kagutsuchi. According to the Kojiki upper scroll on deity-birth, when Izanagi slew Kagutsuchi, eight mountain deities emerged from different parts of the body. This deity is one of those formed from the four limbs, listed alongside Hayamatsumi, Harayamatsumi, and Toyamatsumi. The arrangement of head, chest, belly, genitals, and four limbs across the eight deities forms the ancient stratum of mountain deities of the archipelago.
