Description

Shirahiwake (白日別) is a divine name recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) upper scroll land-birth section. The name is the deification of Tsukushi Province (modern northern Fukuoka), one of the four faces of Tsukushi-no-Shima (modern Kyushu). According to the Kojiki, "next they produced Tsukushi-no-Shima. This island has one body and four faces. Each face has a name. Tsukushi Province is called Shirahiwake, Toyo Province is called Toyohiwake, Hi Province is called Takehimukahi-toyokujihineake, and Kumaso Province is called Takehiwake". The passage situates Kyushu as one island with four regional faces in the Izanagi-Izanami land-creation. Father and mother deities are Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto. Sibling deities born in the same section: Toyohiwake (Toyo), Takehimukahi-toyokujihineake (Hi), and Takehiwake (Kumaso). Said to be venerated as Shirahiwake-no-Mikoto at Tsukushi Shrine, the Engishiki (927 CE) Myojin Taisha in Chikushino, Fukuoka.
