Description
Suseribime-no-Mikoto (須勢理毘売命) is an earthly goddess recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). She is the daughter of Takehaya-Susanoo-no-Mikoto and the principal consort of Okuninushi-no-Kami. She stands at the core of the Izumo myth cycle as a goddess who links the Land of Roots trials narrative with the Izumo lineage. According to the Kojiki upper scroll on Okuninushi, when Oanamuji-no-Kami (Okuninushi) fled the eighty deities and reached the Land of Roots, he met Suseribime-no-Mikoto at the gate of Susanoo's palace, and the source records "they immediately exchanged glances and married". She gave Oanamuji a stole (hire) that allowed him to pass the chambers of snakes, of centipedes and bees, and the field-fire trial set by Susanoo. The two escaped with the sword, bow-arrows, and heavenly singing zither. Susanoo conferred the name Okuninushi and pronounced her the principal consort. Father: Susanoo; consort: Okuninushi. Shrines: Izumo Taisha (Izumo Province ichinomiya).
