Tagitsu-Hime

Publicly verified

One of the three Munakata goddesses, enshrined at the Nakatsu-miya of Munakata Taisha and recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki.

Overview

Tagitsu-Hime is one of the three Munakata Goddesses, born during the oath-making episode between Amaterasu-Omikami and Susanoo-no-Mikoto. The Kojiki writes the name as 多岐都比売命; the Nihon Shoki uses 湍津姫命.

Appearances in Sources

The Nihon Shoki, Book One (Kamiyo I), sixth section, records that Susanoo bit Amaterasu's bead and the mist of his breath gave rise to "Tagitsu-Hime." The Kojiki oath-making section similarly lists her among the three daughters born of the oath.

Genealogy

She is one of three sisters born of the oath between Amaterasu and Susanoo: Takiri-Hime (or Tagori-Hime), Tagitsu-Hime, and Ichikishima-Hime. The three are venerated together as the ancestral deities of the Munakata clan.

Worship and Ritual

She is enshrined as the principal deity of the Nakatsu-miya of Munakata Taisha on Oshima Island, the ichi-no-miya of Chikuzen Province. The shrine forms part of "Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region," inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.

Alternative Names

Also recorded as 多岐都比売命 in the Kojiki and 湍津姫命 in the Nihon Shoki. Variant readings include Takitsuhime.
