Description

Takehaya-Susanoo-no-Mikoto is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume as one of the three noble children born from the purification of Izanagi-no-Mikoto after his return from Yomi, arising from his nose. He is assigned the rule of the sea, but appears in many further episodes: the oath with his sister Amaterasu-Omikami, the cause of her seclusion in the rock-cave, his expulsion from Takamagahara, the slaying of the Yamata-no-Orochi in Izumo, the marriage to Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto and the meeting with Okuninushi-no-Kami in Ne-no-Katasukuni. Nihon Shoki (720 CE) Jindai upper sections give parallel accounts with several variant lineages. His children include Yashimajinumi-no-Kami, Otoshi-no-Kami and Ukanomitama-no-Kami, and Okuninushi descends from him. He is enshrined at Susa Jinja in Izumo, Yaegaki Jinja in Matsue, Tsushima Jinja in Aichi and Yasaka Jinja in Kyoto, and from medieval times fuses with Gozu Tenno in the Gion cult for protection from epidemics.
