Dewa Sanzan-jinja
Dewa Sanzan Shrine in Yamagata enshrines the kami of Mounts Haguro, Gassan, and Yudono, a major Shugendo center.
Description
Dewa Sanzan Shrine (Dewa Sanzan-jinja) is the collective name for the shrines of Mount Haguro (414 m), Mount Gassan (1,984 m), and Mount Yudono in Tsuruoka and Higashi-Tagawa District, Yamagata Prefecture. The Sanjingosaiden at the summit of Mount Haguro enshrines all three mountain deities together. According to shrine tradition recorded in the Hagurosan Engi, the Sanzan were opened in 593 CE by Prince Nojo, son of Emperor Sushun, who ascended the mountains and received divine visions. Mount Haguro Shrine enshrines Ide-ha-no-Kami, identified with Ukanomitama. Mount Gassan Shrine, recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho of the Tagawa district of Dewa Province as "Gassan-jinja, Myojin Dai," enshrines Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto. Mount Yudono Shrine is the inner sanctuary, with a sacred rock as its shintai. The Sanzan have been the center of Haguro Shugendo for over a millennium. The five-storied pagoda on Mount Haguro is a National Treasure.
