Central Kyoto Tenmangu wedged into the Shinkyogoku arcade and Nishiki Market, the tutelary shrine of the city's commercial heart.
Description
Nishiki Tenmangu in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, stands at the intersection of the Shinkyogoku shopping street and Nishiki Market, the "kitchen of Kyoto." Its main deity is Sugawara no Michizane, descending from Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka. Shrine tradition places the founding in 1003 on the former residence of Michizane's father Koreyoshi, and records relocation to the current site during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's urban remodeling of Kyoto in the Tensho era (1573-1593). The shrine's "Nishiki no Mizu" spring is a noted urban water source. The shrine serves as the tutelary of the Shinkyogoku merchants and is venerated for educational success and commercial prosperity. Annual rites include Baika-sai on February 25 and the October reisai.
