Okinogu
Okinogu in Naha, Okinawa is one of the Eight Ryukyu Shrines, established in the Ryukyu kingdom period as the guardian of Naha port.
Description
Okinogu (沖宮) is a Shinto shrine in Onoyama-cho, Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, one of the Eight Ryukyu Shrines (Ryukyu hassha) established under the Ryukyu kingdom. The principal kami are the distinctive Ryukyu names Tenjuku-me-Ryugu-O-Mikami, Tenjuku-o-Ryugu-O-Mikami, and Tenryu-O-Mikami, alongside Izanami-no-Mikoto as an auxiliary deity from the mainland Shinto pantheon. According to tradition, the shrine was founded in the medieval Ryukyu kingdom as the guardian shrine of Naha port. The shrine's rituals preserve a syncretism of Ryukyu and mainland Shinto traditions, with observances based on the Ryukyu calendar alongside the standard Shinto annual cycle. After the destruction of the original shrine in the Battle of Okinawa, the present precincts were rebuilt at Onoyama Park in 1975 following the Naha port land reclamation.
