Description
Sefa-utaki is a Ryukyu Shinto sacred site (utaki) in Kudeken, Chinen, Nanjo City, Okinawa Prefecture. It was the highest-ranking site among the fourteen Agari-umaai pilgrimage stations of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and is now a component of the UNESCO World Heritage "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu." Four worship places (Ujoguchi, Ufuguui, Yuinchi, and Sanguui) are arranged within Ryukyuan limestone outcrops and a stalactite hollow, with the Sanguui offering a distant view of Kudaka Island across the sea. According to the Chuzan Seikan (compiled by Sho Shoken in 1690), the Ryukyuan creation deity Amamikyo descended and established seven utaki including this site. The royal investiture ritual of the Kikoe-okimi was performed at Yuinchi, recorded in detail in the Ryukyu Shintoki (Taichu, 1605).
