Description
Sugawara-in Tenmangu Shrine (Sugawara-in Tenmangu-jinja) stands on Karasuma-dori in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, on land traditionally identified as the Sugawara family residence "Sugawara-in" used by Michizane's grandfather Kiyokimi, father Koreyoshi, and Michizane himself. It enshrines Sugawara no Michizane (845-903) together with his father and grandfather. According to shrine tradition, after Michizane's death in 903 CE his spirit was enshrined at the former family residence, preceding the founding of Kitano Tenmangu in 947 CE. A well believed to have been used for Michizane's ubuyu (first bath) survives in the precincts, identifying the site with the birth narrative recorded in medieval Tenjin literature. The shrine continues as a Jinja Honcho registered shrine within Kyoto's historic Tenjin network.
