Description
Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya stands in Takei, Shimo-Suwa-cho, Suwa District, Nagano Prefecture, on the north shore of Lake Suwa along the historic Nakasendo highway, and is one of the four precincts of Suwa Taisha and an ichinomiya of Shinano Province. The shrine is recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho of the Suwa district as "Minakatatomi-jinja niza" with myojin taisha status. The main enshrined deities are Takeminakata-no-Kami and his consort Yasakatome-no-Kami; Takeminakata is recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) Land-of-Reeds pacification section as the son of Okuninushi-no-Kami who retreated to Suwa. The offering hall and side worship halls (Important Cultural Properties), built in 1781 by Tatekawa Wasiro, exemplify late-Edo shrine carpentry. The Onbashira festival held every six years is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
