Description

Takase Shrine (Takase-jinja) stands in Takase, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, in the southeastern part of the Tonami Plain. It is counted as one of the ichinomiya of Etchu Province, together with Imizu Shrine and Keta Shrine forming the so-called three-shrine system. The main enshrined deity is Onamuchi-no-Mikoto (an alternate name of Okuninushi-no-Kami), with Ameikutama-no-Mikoto and Isotakeru-no-Mikoto as co-enshrined deities. Okuninushi appears in the Kojiki (712 CE) Land-of-Reeds transfer section as the principal earthly deity, and the shrine continues the Izumo-lineage cult northward along the ancient Hokuriku road. According to shrine tradition, the shrine was founded during the reign of Emperor Keiko. The Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho of the Tonami district of Etchu Province records the shrine as Takase-jinja, and it was elevated to kokuhei shosha rank in 1871.
