Description
Tosa Shrine (Tosa-jinja) stands in Shinane, Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, and is the ichinomiya of Tosa Province. The shrine is recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho of the Tosa district of Tosa Province as "Tosa-zo-jinja, Myojin Dai," and is one of the leading provincial shrines of Shikoku. The main enshrined deity is Ajisuki-Takahikone-no-Kami, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) as the offspring of Okuninushi-no-Kami and Takirihime-no-Mikoto, identified with the Kamo and Katsuragi cult lineage. The shrine is also recorded in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE) as the local deity Hitokotonushi-no-Kami, who was banished to Tosa by Emperor Yuryaku in a recorded account. The main hall, offering hall, kuro-mon, and koro-mon (1570 rebuild by Chosokabe Motochika) are designated Important Cultural Properties. The shrine was elevated to kokuhei chusha rank in the Meiji era.
