Description

Amatsu-Hitaka-Hiko-Hohodemi-no-Mikoto is the formal Kojiki name of the heavenly deity commonly called Hoori-no-Mikoto or Yamasachihiko. Kojiki (712 CE, upper volume, Yamasachi-Umisachi episode) records that, after losing the fishhook of his elder brother Hoderi-no-Mikoto (Umisachihiko), Hoori was guided by Shiotsuchi-no-Kami to the palace of the sea-deity Watatsumi. There he wed Toyotama-bime-no-Mikoto, spent three years in the sea palace, and returned with the fishhook and the tide-rising and tide-ebbing jewels. Nihon Shoki (720 CE, Jindai-ge, ninth-segment alternate texts) records the deity under the name Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto, where 'hiko' is a sacred title for a son of the sun. His father is Ninigi-no-Mikoto, mother Konohanasakuya-hime; his son Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto became the father of Emperor Jinmu, making Hohodemi the grandfather of the first emperor. He is principally enshrined at Kagoshima Jingu in Kirishima, Kagoshima (ichinomiya of Osumi Province), at Aoshima Shrine in Miyazaki, and at Kirishima Jingu in Kagoshima.
