Description
Ame-no-Tokotachi-no-Kami is a solitary deity (hitorigami) recorded at the opening of Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). Kojiki, upper volume, opening section, records: 'Next there came into being a deity named Ame-no-Tokotachi-no-Kami. These two deities likewise came into being as solitary deities and concealed themselves.' The deity is the fifth and final member of the Kotoamatsukami group, following Ame-no-Minakanushi, Takamimusubi, Kamimusubi (the three creator deities) and Umashi-Ashikabi-Hikoji. Nihon Shoki (Jindai-jo, first-segment alternate texts) gives the corresponding name as Ame-no-Tokotachi-no-Mikoto. As a solitary deity, Ame-no-Tokotachi has no consort and is paired conceptually with Kuni-no-Tokotachi-no-Kami, the leading deity of the subsequent Kamiyo Nanayo, the two together representing the enduring permanence of the heavenly and earthly realms. Principal places of veneration include Komagata Shrine in Oshu, Iwate, and Mitake Shrine in Ome, Tokyo, among Shugendo-related shrines.
