Description

Ikutsu-Hikone-no-Mikoto is a heavenly deity recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). In Kojiki, upper volume, the ukehi (oath) section, he is the fourth of the five male deities born when Susanoo bit and exhaled the misumaru jewels of Amaterasu, after Ame-no-Oshihomimi, Ame-no-Hohi, and Amatsu-Hikone. Nihon Shoki, Jindai-jo, sixth segment, gives the parallel account. His father is Susanoo (as generative father of the ukehi) or Amaterasu. His elder brothers are Ame-no-Oshihomimi (origin of the imperial line), Ame-no-Hohi (ancestor of Izumo-no-Kuni-no-Miyatsuko), and Amatsu-Hikone; his younger brother is Kumano-Kusubi-no-Mikoto. Unlike his elder brothers, Ikutsu-Hikone has no firmly attested clan-ancestral tradition. He is enshrined at Kambe Shrine in Matsue, Shimane and at auxiliary shrines of Mikami Shrine in Yasu, Shiga, among others, generally in joint veneration of the five male deities as a group, preserving his role as a node within the ukehi mythology.
