Amatsu-Hiko-Ne-no-Mikoto, born from Amaterasu and Susanoo's covenant, is a heavenly kami and ancestor of numerous provincial clans. Enshrined chiefly at Tado Grand Shrine in Mie Prefecture, he is venerated across the border regions of Omi and Ise.

Description

Amatsu-Hiko-Ne-no-Mikoto is a heavenly kami recorded in the *Kojiki* (Records of Ancient Matters, 712 CE) and *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan, 720 CE). According to the covenant (*ukeai*) passage, he was born as the third of five male kami produced when Susanoo-no-O bit and exhaled mist from Amaterasu-no-Omikami's magatama beads. He is positioned after Ame-no-Oshihomimi-no-Mikoto and Ame-no-Hohi-no-Mikoto in the sequence of that generation.

His genealogy identifies Susanoo-no-O (or Amaterasu) as his father, with brothers Ame-no-Oshihomimi and Ame-no-Hohi above him, and younger brothers Ikutsu-Hiko-Ne and Kumano-Kusushi. The *Shinsen Shōjiroku* (Compiled Register of Clans, 815 CE) traces numerous provincial governors and regional clans to his line, including the Ōi-Kōchi, Nukada-Be-no-Yuzaori, Ki-no-Kuni, and Yamato-Tanaka lineages.

His primary shrine of worship is Tado Grand Shrine (*Tado Taisha*) in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, where he serves as the tutelary deity of northern Ise province. He is also enshrined at Mase Shrine in Gero, Gifu Prefecture, and Uma-Miooka-Watamuki Shrine in Hino, Shiga Prefecture. His veneration centres on the border region between Omi (modern Shiga) and Ise provinces, and extends widely across the eastern Kii region and Kinai, reflecting his role as the ancestral kami of provincial clans.
