Description

Inada-no-Miyanushi-Suga-no-Yatsumimi-no-Kami is a kunitsukami recorded in Kojiki (712 CE). The upper volume, Susanoo-no-Mikoto section, records: 'Thus is the place called Suga. When this great deity first built the Suga Palace, clouds rose from the land. He then composed a song: Yakumo tatsu Izumo yaegaki, tsumagomi ni yaegaki tsukuru, sono yaegaki wo. Calling Ashinazuchi, he appointed him head of the palace and bestowed upon him the name Inada-no-Miyanushi-Suga-no-Yatsumimi-no-Kami.' Immediately following the earliest waka poem 'Yakumo tatsu,' Ashinazuchi receives a new divine name and is appointed master of the Suga Palace. His former name was Ashinazuchi; his consort is Tenazuchi and his children include Kushinada-hime and the eight sisters. His father is Oyamatsumi-no-Kami. He is the father-in-law who gave Kushinada-hime to Susanoo and the household deity appointed master of the Suga Palace. 'Yatsumimi' is variously interpreted as 'having eight daughters' or as 'a sacred listener.' He is enshrined at Suga Shrine in Unnan, Shimane (an Izumo shikinaisha), known as 'the first palace in Japan' and 'the place of origin of waka,' jointly venerated with Ashinazuchi, Tenazuchi, Kushinada-hime, and Susanoo in a single ritual structure. He is also worshipped at Yaegaki Shrine in Matsue, Shimane, with veneration distributed across Izumo. The present-day Suga district lies in Daito-cho, Unnan, Shimane.
