Itsuse-no-Mikoto

Itsuse-no-Mikoto is a deity recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). He is the eldest son of Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto and Tamayori-bime-no-Mikoto and the eldest brother of Kamuyamato-Iwarebiko-no-Mikoto (Emperor Jinmu). Kojiki, middle volume, Jinmu chronicle, records: 'Dwelling in Hyuga, hearing of a fair land to the east, he consulted with his elder brother, saying, Let us go together and pacify the realm under heaven.' Itsuse and Iwarebiko set out from the Takachiho palace in Hyuga and headed east. Fighting Nagasunehiko at Shiraka-no-tsu in Naniwa, Itsuse took a stray arrow in his arm, lamenting 'I have been wounded by a lowly slave.' He died at the harbor Onominato in Kii Province and was buried at Mount Kamayama in Kii. His father is Ugayafukiaezu; his mother Tamayori-bime; his younger brothers Inahi-no-Mikoto, Mikenu-no-Mikoto, and Kamuyamato-Iwarebiko (Jinmu). Through Ugayafukiaezu he descends from Hoori (Yamasachihiko) and Toyotama-bime, joining the sea-deity lineage. His principal place of veneration is Kamayama Shrine in Wada, Wakayama (Engishiki shikinaisha of Kii Province), with the traditional Kamayama tomb adjacent to the precinct. The shrine is listed in Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) as a Myojin-Taisha and ranks among the principal shrines of Kii Province.
