Mizuhanome-no-Kami

Publicly verified

A water deity recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, born from Izanami after the birth of the fire deity Kagutsuchi.

Overview

Mizuhanome-no-Kami is a water deity who appears in the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki. The Kojiki writes the name as 弥都波能売神, while the Nihon Shoki uses 罔象女神. Both texts place her among the deities born immediately after the death of Izanami.

Appearances in Sources

In the Kojiki Book One (kamiumi section), she is the first of two deities born from Izanami's urine after Izanami was burned giving birth to Kagutsuchi. The Engishiki Jinmyocho lists Niukawakami Jinja in Yamato Province as a Myojin Taisha shrine that enshrines her.

Genealogy

She is recorded as having come into being from Izanami's body. The Kojiki pairs her with Wakumusubi-no-Kami, who emerged at the same moment.

Worship and Ritual

She is enshrined at the three sanctuaries of Niukawakami Jinja (Naka, Kami, Shimo) in Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture. The shrine has long been a center for petitions concerning rain and water management.

Alternative Names

The Kojiki form 弥都波能売神 (Mitsuhanome) and the Nihon Shoki form 罔象女神 are treated as the same deity in the Kokugakuin Shinmei Database.
