Description

Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto is a heavenly deity recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). The Nihon Shoki form Nyoshohayahi-no-Mikoto bears the alternate name Amateru-Kuniteru-Hiko-Ame-no-Hoakari-Kushitama-Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto. He descends on the heavenly rock-boat to Kawachi Province, later moves to Yamato, and is the ancestor of many ancient clans including the Mononobe and the Hozumi. Kojiki places him in the Jimmu eastern campaign as the deity served by the Yamato chief Nagasunehiko. According to Nihon Shoki Jindai lower, he received the ten treasures from Amaterasu-Omikami and descended to Kawachi on the heavenly rock-boat, then presented to Emperor Jimmu the heavenly-feather arrow and the quiver as proof of his heavenly origin and pledged loyalty by slaying his brother-in-law Nagasunehiko. The Sendai Kuji Hongi gives him as child of Ame-no-Oshihomimi-no-Mikoto and Takuhata-chichihime, identical with Ame-no-Hoakari-no-Mikoto. With Tomiyabime (Mikashikiyahime), the sister of Nagasunehiko, he begets Umashimaji-no-Mikoto, ancestor of the Mononobe. He is enshrined at Iwafune Jinja in Katano, Osaka and at Ishikiri Tsurugiya Jinja in Higashiosaka.
