Omagatsuhi-no-Kami is a magatsuhi deity (a deity associated with calamity and impurity) recorded in the Kojiki, Book One, in the misogi section. The deity emerged when Izanagi performed purification after his return from Yomi.

Appearances in Sources

The Kojiki kamiumi-misogi section records that when Izanagi performed misogi at Awakihara at the river mouth of Tachibana, two magatsuhi deities arose from the middle current: Yasomagatsuhi-no-Kami and Omagatsuhi-no-Kami.

Genealogy

He is one of two magatsuhi deities born from the pollution carried back from Yomi. Following these two, three additional deities arose to correct the calamity: Kamunaobi-no-Kami, Onaobi-no-Kami, and Izunome-no-Kami.

Worship and Ritual

Dedicated shrines are uncommon. He is invoked in some haraedo subordinate shrines and is referenced in the Norito of Great Purification (Oharae Norito) as a deity associated with the calamity to be cleansed.

Alternative Names

The reading Omagatsuhi follows Kokugakuin Database conventions. The Edo-period scholars Motoori Norinaga and Hirata Atsutane debated the interpretation of the magatsuhi deities in their theological commentaries.
