Description

Omagatsuhi-no-Kami (大禍津日神) is a heavenly deity recorded in the purification chapter of the Kojiki (712 CE). Together with Yasomagatsuhi-no-Kami, the deity emerged from the misfortunes (maga) produced during Izanagi's purification, symbolizing the source of offense, defilement, and calamity, and bearing the larger working of misfortune. According to the Kojiki upper scroll, "the deities born from the impurities of that defiled country were Yasomagatsuhi-no-Kami, next Omagatsuhi-no-Kami". When Izanagi returned from Yomi and purified himself, Yasomagatsuhi was followed by Omagatsuhi. The cleansing deities Kamunaobi, Onaobi, and Izunome then emerged. Although few principal shrines exist, the deity is cited in the Oharae-no-Kotoba liturgy of the great purification rites at the end of the sixth and twelfth months as the source of offense and defilement.
