Description

Omodaru-no-Kami (於母陀流神) is the sixth-generation male deity of the Seven Generations of the Age of the Gods, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). The Kojiki writes the name as 淤母陀琉神 and the Nihon Shoki as 面足尊. He is paired with his consort Ayakashikone-no-Kami. The name "Omodaru" means "complete of face", interpreted as the deification of the completion of the human body and features. According to the Kojiki upper scroll on cosmic beginnings, he appears as the sixth generation alongside Ayakashikone-no-Kami. He follows the previous generation Otonoji and Otonobe and precedes the seventh generation Izanagi and Izanami, occupying the final stage of human-form formation in the mythological lineage. In medieval Shinto-Buddhist combination, he and Ayakashikone were identified with the Sixth Heaven King Mara of Buddhism.
