Description

Otonoji-no-Kami (意富斗能地神) is the fifth-generation male deity of the Seven Generations of the Age of the Gods, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). The Nihon Shoki writes the name as Onotonomichi-no-Mikoto, Onotomabe-no-Mikoto, or in alternate traditions as Otomichi or Otomabe. Paired with his consort Otonobe-no-Kami, the deity represents the primordial state of the earth as solidified surface. According to the Kojiki upper scroll, in the section on cosmic beginnings, he appears as the fifth generation, following the fourth-generation Tsunoguhi and Ikuguhi and preceding the sixth-generation Omodaru and Ayakashikone. He stands at the transitional position where the form of paired male-female deities becomes established. He is venerated at Kumano Hayatama Taisha in Wakayama and Futarasan Shrine in Tochigi.
