Description
Shinatsuhiko-no-Kami (志那都比古神) is the wind deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). Born in the deity-birth phase by Izanagi and Izanami, he governs agricultural winds and climate. According to the Kojiki upper scroll on deity-birth, "next they produced the wind deity, named Shinatsuhiko-no-Kami". He emerged after the sea, river, mountain, and field deities, immediately before Izanami's fire-death. The Nihon Shoki Age of the Gods upper, fifth section variant, writes the name as Shinatsuhiko-no-Mikoto and Shinatobe-no-Mikoto. Father is Izanagi; mother is Izanami. The Nihon Shoki's paired Shinatobe-no-Mikoto is understood as the consort. Principal shrine: Tatsuta Taisha in Sango, Nara. The Nihon Shoki records that in Tenmu Year 4 (675 CE) the imperial court instituted rites to the wind deity at this shrine.
