Description

Shiotsuchi-no-Kami (塩椎神) is a sea-and-tide-route deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). He governs the ebb and flow of the tide and grants knowledge of sea routes, appearing as a helper deity who shifts the course of the Yamasachihiko / Umisachihiko cycle. According to the Kojiki upper scroll on Yamasachihiko, when Hoori-no-Mikoto (Yamasachihiko) wept on the shore over the lost fishing hook of his elder brother Hoderi, Shiotsuchi appeared, built a small boat of seamless plaited bamboo, and dispatched him to the sea-god's palace, indicating the route with the instruction "go as the road guides you". The Nihon Shoki (720 CE) writes the name as Shiotsuchi-no-Oji. In the Jimmu expedition section, he tells Jimmu of the beautiful land to the east, prompting the start of the eastward campaign. Principal shrine: Shiogama Shrine in Miyagi (Mutsu Province ichinomiya).
