Overview

Yatsukamizu-Omitsunu-no-Mikoto is the protagonist of the Kuni-biki ("land-pulling") episode in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki. The Kojiki refers to him as Omizunu-no-Kami and places him in the genealogy leading to Okuninushi-no-Kami.

Appearances in Sources

The Izumo no Kuni Fudoki (compiled 713 CE), Ou District section, recounts the Kuni-biki myth: he proclaimed "the narrow cloth-strip land has been built small; let us stitch it on," and pulled surplus land from Shiragi, Sata, Nuna, and Koshi with a three-strand rope, fastening it to form the Izumo coast.

Genealogy

The Kojiki, Book One (Suga shrine genealogy), records him as the son of Fukabuchi-no-Mizuyareha-no-Kami and Ame-no-Tsudoechine-no-Kami. He married Futenushi-no-Kami's daughter Futemimi-no-Kami and fathered Ame-no-Fuyukinu-no-Kami.

Worship and Ritual

He is enshrined as the principal deity of Nagahama Jinja in Nishi-Sono-cho, Izumo, Shimane Prefecture. The shrine is a former Prefectural Shrine and is designated a Special Shrine by the Shimane Prefecture Jinja Office.

Alternative Names

The Kojiki orthography is 淤美豆奴神 (Omizunu-no-Kami), while the Fudoki form 八束水臣津野命 is the formal Fudoki naming. Variants include Omizu-Omitsunu-no-Mikoto.
