Okuninushi no Kuni-zukuri

Publicly verified

A Kojiki narrative in which Okuninushi, with Sukunabikona, organizes the central land of reeds before the latter departs for the eternal realm.

Story

The Kojiki, Book One, recounts that after Okuninushi returned from the underworld and sought to organize the Central Land of Reed Plains, a small deity arrived from beyond the waves on a boat made from a metaplexis pod, wearing a goose-skin robe. Kamimusubi-no-Kami identified him as her son Sukunabikona-no-Kami, and the two deities are said to have worked together to complete the land-building. After Sukunabikona departed for the eternal realm of Tokoyo, another deity arrived by sea and asked to be enshrined on Mount Mimoro, where he was venerated as Omononushi-no-Kami.

Narrative structure

The Kojiki arranges the episode as a sequence: the arrival of Sukunabikona, joint land-building work, establishment of medicine and brewing and farming techniques, Sukunabikona's return to Tokoyo, and the enshrinement of Omononushi at Mount Miwa.

Setting and locations

The Izumo region (Shimane Prefecture) forms the principal stage; Mount Miwa in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture (Omiwa Jinja) and Dogo Onsen in Iyo are recorded as related sites.
