Description
Chiyoho Inari Shrine (Chiyoho Inari-jinja, popularly "Oinari-san") stands in Kaizu City, Gifu Prefecture, west of the lower Ibi River, and is counted among the three great Inari shrines of Japan together with Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto and Toyokawa Inari in Aichi. The main enshrined deity is Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) as the offspring of Susanoo-no-Mikoto and venerated nationwide as the deity of grain, harvest, and commercial enterprise. According to shrine tradition, the shrine was founded in the Bunmei era (1469-1486) when a descendant of Minamoto no Yoshiie enshrined the Inari deity of his ancestors at this site. The shrine is widely known among Nagoya-area merchants, who visit on the monthly devotional day (tsukinami matsuri) on the last day of each month. The shrine has been managed continuously by the Mori family hereditary priesthood.
