Haruna Shrine

Publicly verified

Haruna Shrine on the slopes of Mount Haruna, a Kanto mountain shrine where the main hall is built into a rock face.

Description

Haruna Shrine in Takasaki, Gunma, stands on the southeastern slope of Mount Haruna (1,449 m) in a ravine of striking rock formations. Among the Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) registrations of Kozuke Province it appears as "Haruna Jinja." The main hall is set into a cliff face known as Misugata-iwa, which itself serves as the deity body. The shrine ranks as the sixth shrine of former Kozuke Province and stands with Akagi Shrine and Myogi Shrine as the Three Mountains of Joshu. The main deities are Homusubi no Kami (the fire deity) and Haniyama-hime no Kami (the earth deity), based on the Kojiki (712 CE) creation narrative in which Izanami bore Kagutsuchi and Haniyama-hime. Oyamatsumi, Omononushi and Konohanasakuya-hime are enshrined alongside. Founded in 586 by tradition, the current Bunka-era complex is an Important Cultural Property. The May 5 reisai with kagura is the principal rite.
