Description
Imizu Shrine (射水神社) is a Shinto shrine in Furushiro, Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, the first-ranked shrine of the former Etchu Province and listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) as a Myojin-Taisha. The principal kami is Ninigi-no-Mikoto, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) as the grandson of Amaterasu who descended from heaven to Mount Takachiho. Until 1875 the main shrine stood on the summit of Mount Futagami, with the present hall functioning as the lower shrine; in that year it was relocated to its current site within the former Takaoka Castle precincts. The shrine was the leading of the four major shrines of Etchu and held the rank of national shrine of the middle grade in the Meiji era.
