Ishizuchi Shrine
Ishizuchi Shrine in Saijo, Ehime is the foot-shrine of Mount Ishizuchi, organising four sub-shrines as the ritual core of the Ishizuchi mountain cult.
Description
Ishizuchi Shrine (石鎚神社) is a Shinto shrine in Saijo, Ehime Prefecture, with its main hall (Kuchinomiya Hongu) at the foot of Mount Ishizuchi and three further sub-shrines on the mountain forming a four-shrine, one-mountain ritual structure. The principal kami is Ishizuchi-hiko-no-Mikoto, the deified spirit of the mountain, known in medieval times as Ishizuchi Gongen through Shugendo syncretism. Shrine tradition attributes the founding to the ascetic En no Ozunu in the late seventh century, and the cult flourished as a popular Edo-period pilgrimage from Shikoku and the Inland Sea region. The Oyama-biraki great festival of 1 to 10 July remains the largest observance, with white-robed pilgrims chanting as they ascend the chain courses.
