Isono Shrine in Saijo, Ehime is a Myojin-Taisha listed in the Engishiki and the host shrine of the Saijo Festival.
Description
Isono Shrine (伊曽乃神社) is a Shinto shrine in Nakano, Saijo, Ehime Prefecture, identified with the entry for Iyo Province, Nii District in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) as a Myojin-Taisha, the highest-ranked shrine of the former Iyo Province. The principal kami are the rough spirit (aramitama) of Amaterasu-Omikami and Takekunikoriwake-no-Mikoto, recorded in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE) as the second son of Emperor Keiko enfeoffed in Iyo Province. Shrine tradition places the founding in the reign of Emperor Seimu, and the shrine remained the highest-ranked shrine of Iyo through the medieval period. The annual Saijo Festival on 15-16 October, with about 80 floats and a river-entry rite, is registered as an intangible cultural property of Saijo.
