Description
Iwakiyama Shrine (岩木山神社) is a Shinto shrine in Hyakuzawa, Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, the first-ranked shrine of the Tsugaru region, taking Mount Iwaki (1,625 m, the "Tsugaru Fuji") as its sacred body. The principal kami are Utsushikunitama-no-Kami, an alternative name of Okuninushi-no-Kami recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE), together with Tatsubi-hime-no-Kami, Ukanome-no-Kami, Oyamatsumi-no-Kami, and Sakanoue no Karitamaro-no-Mikoto. According to shrine tradition, the summit oku-miya was founded in 780 and the foot shrine in 800 by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro during his eastern campaigns. The present main hall (1667) and tower gate (1619) were built by Tsugaru Nobumasa of Hirosaki domain and are designated Important Cultural Properties, while the Oyamasankei ascent rite is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
