Description
Kameido Tenjin Shrine, located in Kameido, Koto Ward, Tokyo, is a regional Tenmangu branch of Dazaifu Tenmangu enshrining Sugawara no Michizane (845-903). It is counted among the Edo Three Great Tenjin alongside Yushima Tenjin and Hirakawa Tenjin. According to shrine tradition, it was founded in 1661 by Sugawara Otorii Nobusuke, a descendant of Michizane and a priest of Dazaifu Tenmangu. In 1662, the shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna granted land at the present site, and the precincts were modeled on Dazaifu Tenmangu with the arched bridges and Shinji pond. The life and exile of Michizane are recorded in the Nihongi-ryaku and Kanke-bunso. The shrine is also celebrated for its wisteria festival held from April to May.
