Description

Kishu Toshogu, located in Wakauranishi, Wakayama City, is a Toshogu shrine enshrining Tokugawa Ieyasu (Tosho Daigongen) together with the Kishu domain founder Tokugawa Yorinobu (Nanryu Daijin). It stands on the slope of Mt. Gongen overlooking Wakanoura Bay, a scenic location celebrated in the Man'yoshu. Founded in 1621 at Yorinobu's commission to fulfill his father Ieyasu's posthumous wishes, the shrine was built by the Kyoto master carpenter Kora Munehiro in the gongen-zukuri style. The honden, ishi-no-ma, haiden, karamon, romon, and surrounding fences from 1621 are all designated Important Cultural Properties. The Wakamatsuri held May 16-17, designated an intangible folk cultural property of Wakayama Prefecture, features mikoshi descending the 108 stone steps of the Samuraizaka.
