Description
Kunozan Toshogu, located in Negoya, Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City, originated when Tokugawa Ieyasu was buried at this site after his death at Sunpu Castle in 1616. Together with Nikko Toshogu, it forms the core of the Toshogu cult, with the rank of former Bekkaku Kanpeisha and current Bekkaku Hyo shrine. The principal deity is Tokugawa Ieyasu (Tosho Daigongen), the first Tokugawa shogun (1543-1616), with Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga as attendant deities. According to Ieyasu's will he was buried at Kunozan and later, in 1617, his remains were reinterred at Nikko, though the Tokugawa main line preserves a tradition that Ieyasu's body remains permanently at Kunozan. The honden, ishi-no-ma, and haiden in the gongen-zukuri style were built in 1617 by Hidetada, and the spirit hall took its present form under Iemitsu in 1650. Thirteen buildings including the honden and the karamon were designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties in 2010. The annual rite on April 17 commemorates Ieyasu's death.
